The establishing shot is a MS of a woman. The location is in some woods. This is a typical shot associated with this type of genre. The lighting is key lighting on the woman showing that she is the most important in the shot. The light looks almost to be a car headlight.
The MS of the band on the barge shows a lot of stereotypes. The bands image is all dark clothes, the main singer and the guitarist have dyed blonde hair whereas the bassist and the drummer have black hair, another stereotype of this genre. The lighting in this shot is key/ spotlights overhead of the band.
The stereotypical convention of this genre is graffiti. This is included within the music video when the girl draws on the wall in lipstick.
This LS of groups of people running out of the woods supports the conventions linked with this genre. They are all wearing dark clothing with different band logo's on. They generally have black hair also associated with the rock image. The lighting comes from lamps hung in the trees giving it a rave feel to the audience; a personal favourite with this genre.
The establishing shot is a birds eye view of a man dressed as Michael Jackson. The location is a back alley which traditionally has the connotations of danger which is well known with this genre of music. The lighting is very low key only coming from the streetlights. The colour of red on his jacket links with danger which links with the location of the alley.
The LS of a show is typical with Eminem. The location of the camera makes it seem like you are part of the audience viewing the show. The lighting is key lighting on the stage illuminating the stage and its contents. The clothes he is wearing are very nerdy making it seem like the man is putting on the act.
The location of the club is another stereotype of this genre, as many rap songs are played in clubs and bars. The lighting is spotlight to give the effect of being in a club with strobe lights. The clothing is very casual clothes like jeans, t-shirts and short dresses for the girls. This is a stereotypical convention for a hip hop/rap music video.
The artist is in the alleyway wearing dark clothes. The shot is a LS showing the whole of the artist. The lighting is very low key, only illuminating the artist making him seem more important. This shot uses another convention of this genre of music videos - a lot of big jewellery. There is a lot of rubbish on the floor which is also associated with the stereotype linked to this genre.
The MS shot of the artist is another sterotype. His image is a dead giveaway to him being a rapper; he is wearing a baggy jacket, dirty white, baggy shirt, big jewellery, jeans and a bandana on his head. The way he moves is another convention of this genre. The location looks to be on a stage in front of a neon background.
The CU of the three kids Eminem have as backing dancers. The kids are dressed in traditional rapper style clothing, the baggy clothes with the cap. Something that isn't normally a stereotype is the two girls used as backing dancers. This is because this genre isn't normally aimed at females but at males.
The establishing shot is set in a highschool corridor, which is a popular scene for this genre. This is a good convention because this is the normal place someone of this particular genre would hang out and listen to this style of music. The clothing worn by the students in the shot are simple t-shirts and jeans/skirts which also tell us this is set in a school.
The CU shot of the singers face is another classic shot used by this genre. The lighting illuminates her face making it the more important in the shot. This shot is a popular shot used by this artist and many others in this genre and more genres.
The MS of the singer holding her guitar. The location looks to be in a bedroom, which is normally used by female artists. This shot somewhat defies stereotypes as more males than females play the guitar. The lighting is key lighting coming from the bottom right of the shot.
This MS of two people in a library is a shot that helps tell the story of th song. This is a convention to help get the target audience be attracted to the video; the attractive male in the video is a factor of getting the target audience - females aged between 14-19 to watch the video and listen to the music.
The establishing shot is of the band sitting on a rock watching the sunset. This matches the lyrics "The sun goes down, he stars come out, and all that counts is here and now." The location is on a cliff above a beach, this is a popular location for many pop bands. This is an element of intertextuality as it looks similar to One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful, a favourite of this target audience. The target audience is mainly aimed at females aged between 14-19 as they are a young boy band.
This MS shows the band walking through a street. This is another favourite of boy bands. The lighting is very low, only coming from streetlights around the band making the shot seem in nighttime.
This MS of one of the band members dancing with a girl at a party is a shot used quite a bit with bands. It looks to be a house party which links with bands as that is the kind of music they would play. The lighting comes from strobe lights illuminating the room at different times in different colours.
This LS of a pool party links to bands in many possible ways. It is always a place where they will hang out. And it is another place where their music would be played. As apposed to a heavy metal band; They wouldn't be walking through a town or swimming. The clothes that everybody is wearing are simple party clothes which link with the clothes the band would wear - jeans and t-shirts.
The shot in the bathroom is a MS of a band member and a girl. The video is telling the story of the lyrics. "Lets go somewhere no one else can see, you and me." The lighting in the bathroom is very low key coming from overhead in a lightbulb. A bathroom links to boy bands because they like hanging out in them especially if they get drunk.
The LS shows a staircase with a person walking down it. The lighting is very low key and uses a lot of reds and oranges. The setting is in a stately home style house. This fits in with the style of the song. The camera movement tilts up slowly to focus on the person walking down the stairs.
The location is in a large bedroom. The colour scheme is reds and oranges which links with the style of the song and the lyrics. The lighting is low key to accentuate the period this is supposed to be set in. The clothes also support the time period.
The ECU shot of the artist singing is a popular shot with this genre, especially in Adele's Rolling In The Deep, a favourite of this target audience. The shot is off center with her head turned to make her mouth center and more to focus on.
The off center MS of the artist makes this shot look almost like the artist is in a dream. The shimmer of light in the center of the shot backs this dream like shot. The lighting is mainly from the shimmer in the center of the shot.
The LS of a masqerade ball links into the style and time period of the video. The location is a dining hall of the stately home. The lighting is key lighting immuminating the different costumes and masks creating an eerie vibe about this scene. like something is going to happen.
This MS is a shot of the artist in the center of the shot making her the more important. The lighting is key lighting to show certain parts of the shot showing the dancers from the masquerade behind the woman. The clothes are formal dresses and suits to link with the masqerade.
This LS is a shot from behind a door making it seem like the audience is spying on the scene and doesnt want to get caught. The lighting is a spotlighrt over the people, illuminating them and not the background of the room.
The MS of people in the ball dancing is different from the other shots in the video. The lighting is more high key and the room is very bright whereas the other shots have been dark. This shot looks to be more modern set rather than set in the different time period. The location looks to be in a well lit room with big windows and spotlights in the ceiling. you can tell this is a more modern setting because the clothes are a lot more modern.
The LS is set outside the stately home of the woman running. The shot was taken at night so the key lighting illuminates the house and the woman running to acceuntuate these certain parts of the scene as being the most important aspects of the scene. The mise en scene is set outside a stately home at night which links in with the other parts of the music video.

On June 21st, I attended an animation workshop run by Mark Charlton. Mark taught us all about animation, what it is and how to do it. In early 2004, Mark created Blue Star Animations, a small animating company and has done many music videos for artists to use. One of his best was the video 'Golden Thread' by Passenger. The way he did this was he layered tracing paper and drew the designs over and over to make it look like it was moving.
Mark taught us how to do Stop Motion animation. We worked on mini projects to learn how to use this animation. The different types of Stop Motion we tried were:
1. Pixilation
2. Cut out animation
3. 3D animation.
For our big project to use these animation types, we had to create our own music video to a song of our choice. My group chose the Beastie Boys song Intergalactic because the opening had a good beat for the idea we had. Our video we created, we used Stop Motion 2D animation to create the effect of a graphic equaliser, which matched with the upbeat tune of the song.
After the workshop, it has opened my eyes to the world of animation and how it works. It could possibly be a factor I would use in my own music video.
